I asked Bjorn to go ride off road since he got the XR4 but I am always busy or got no bike to go. Decided to bring the phantom regardless of logic and meet up at Bjorn's place.
Bjorn was trying to straighten the XR4 sub frame which was caused by a high side when he crashed the other day.
Much time was lost in waiting to get the bike done. In the meantime, Bjorn offered me to ride the BMW and I accepted it. If I can decide to use the phantom for off road riding, the BMW is gonna be much easier to ride since its an adventure touring bike despite the size and weight.
After we got into the riding area, we started to ride around all the trails except for the steep hill area which I don't think the BMW will survive if I crash there. The BMW tackled all the areas fine even on the road bias Tourance tires.
Apart from the soft sand areas, the bike handles well for it weight and size. The torque of the bike also helped in easing the ride. The suspensions were somewhat acceptable though its meant for road riding. The bike was averaging 40 to 50km/h on the hard packed areas with ease.
As we were wandering back to the start area, we went into long stretch of soft sand area and just before reaching the end, I couldn't hold my act together and the bike went down gently. I probably could hold on for a while more but decided to put it down since its so heavy and the terrain is soft sand, which will not do too much damage, if any.
The bad habit of the usual big bikers is to try to save the bike and end up hurting themselves in the back or worse, get trapped by the bike. Sometimes, its safer to bail off the bike.
No damage was found except a broken ego of mine, since I am known for not crashing in a trail ride, no matter what bike. (this part is somewhat exaggerated)
Anyway, after this we went out and got to the usual place for kopi before heading to bike wash at near my place. Overall, the ride was fun and one of the things I have always wanted to do.
